Ohio Republican: Just Let Drug Addicts Die [VIDEO]

reports:

Let them die. That was the jarring message from Middletown City Councilman Dan Picard. A day before Middletown’s council meeting on June 20, City Manager Doug Adkins attended a local heroin summit. He told people there the city was on pace to spend $100,000 on Narcan, a medicine that can block the effects of opioids and is often used by first responders to reverse an overdose.

Picard, swinging his hands in the air, eventually asked the city manager: “Is there a law that says we have to go out?” He was talking about responding to overdoses. The question sat there for several seconds without a reply. It was a stunning question, underscoring the depth of the heroin epidemic and mounting frustration as it continues to get worse.

“We need to make a decision,” he said in the meeting. “Because, frankly, I’m to the point of we need to make a decision that perhaps we don’t.” Adkins told The Cincinnati Enquirer he has asked the city’s law department to analyze whether it is legal to refuse to dispatch for an overdose.

Picard is standing by his comments, saying “we need to put a fear about overdosing in Middletown.” His comments garnered much attention and criticism. “Councilman Picard’s comments went viral and we’ve received hate mail, national news coverage and overloaded voice mail and email in-boxes,” Middletown City Manager Douglas Adkins wrote in a blog post on Wednesday. “Except nothing has changed at all whatsoever,” he continued. “We are responding to every call and rendering aid as needed. We give Narcan where it is appropriate. Period.”

  • Lazycrockett

Wow some white on white hate.

  • Todd20036

Hmm, can we start with Rush Limbaugh and Alex Jones?

  • Joseph Miceli

This man’s hypocrisy is astounding. Isn’t he, in effect, setting up his own “death panels?”
Letting people die because they suffer from addiction is immoral. I guess that’s why he’s a Republican.

    • Todd20036

    • JT

It just shows that all their lies about health care were coupled with faux outrage. They don’t care about people dying and, in fact, make that part of their “health care” plan.

      • Todd20036

Of course not. After 1.5 years during the campaign of claiming Obamacare is terrible and that the GOP has a great plan ready to go as soon as Trump wins, all they have to show is a plan that is a tax break for the top 1000 households, while 22+ million lose their insurance and millions more see their premiums skyrocket.

      • Kissmagrits

And yet, fundamentalist Republicans have been a major roadblock for those states approving statutes permitting assisted suicides. Oregon, Washington and California have found them very intrusive….
        a double standard, methinks.

    • zhera

In the minds of these assholes, only immoral and weak people get addicted. Just like only lazy and immoral people are poor.

    • netxtown

NO. He’s asking the question that needs to be asked. It’s the question that SHOULD make folks take a different look on the current ‘treatment’ practices – and find a better way.

    • Uncle Mark

It’s NOT just about herion. The opiod epidemic includes prescription meds too. What of the senior citizens with opiod addictions, do we fuck them over too? What of someone, who isn’t an addict, but O.D’d the first time they used…or accidentally OD’d on their prescription meds? An attempted suicide? Or do we only help those with great insurance and good incomes?

Will someone offer to educate this very ignorant man? Then again, so many of these republicans are willfully ignorant to the fact that the Red States have more drug addiction issues than Blue States?

Then again, I am reminded during the 2012 Republican primary, the candidates were asked if they should pull the plug on a patient, who was in a coma due to a motorcycle accident, because he didn’t have insurance…and how many in the audience so readily and loudly called for his death.

      They’re all a bunch of shallow-thinking, self-centered, self-righteous, ignorant assholes

  • Ninja0980

Will that apply to all drug addicts or just ones of color?

    • Lazycrockett

You saw how the crack addicts in the inner cities were treated by the law enforcement people in the 80’s.

  • bkmn

I wonder how much money pharmaceutical companies have donated to him.

    • David Walker

According to the display in his window, we know he accepts all major credit cards.

    • Bluto

I wonder how much the pharmaceutical company is charging for Narcan.

  • Lazycrockett

An issue is that most of these people are Oding, getting Narcan and then Oding again the next day. There doesn’t seem to be any recovery plans in place or a way to get people to go to recovery. It’s gotten so bad that when an addict Od’s and die the other addicts try to score the same stuff cause its the good shit.

    • JWC

maybe they should look at Vancouver’s safe site injection

    • fuzzybits

There’s not enough rehab centers either.

      • Lazycrockett

At best /s you get thrown in jail for a couple of days and go thru self withdrawal till you’re out on the street again.

    • clay

The GOP’s “run government like a business” BS fails to integrate its service economy and fails to realize they can’t just keep externalizing social costs, like they have with their (limited) businesses.

  • Elsewhere1010

Once it’s determined that there’s a line to drawn between people who deserve to live and those who deserve to die it would be wise to remember that a line that has been moved once can be moved again. Who will be the next group that doesn’t deserve to live? And are you certain you’re not part of it?

    • Buford

Hear, hear. What you’ve just touched on is the tell-tale lack of empathy that reliably identifies a Republican. “Since I’m not at risk of overdosing and dying, I declare this service to be a wasteful and unnecessary taxpayer expense”… and then, “Help, my wide accidentally took too many pain pills and I demand emergency life-saving treatment!!!”

  • JWC

Hey biggoted GOP type between you and t your health plan they will do just that What an America that would be old white dudes

  • Natty Enquirer

  • fuzzybits

4000 died last year and it’s expected 5000 will die this year in Ohio. They’re even setting up mobile morgues because they can’t handle all the bodies.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

I wonder how many cops & EMTs will go along with this idea.

  • SoCalGal20

States should file a class action against Big Pharma for promoting ang getting people hooked on this shit. Make them pay for it.

    • Lazycrockett

I believe Ohio is in the process of doing this.

      • SoCalGal20

WV should get on that. The company that makes oxycontin specifically targeted WV.

        • Rebecca Gardner

What’s happening in WV is inhuman and criminal.

          • Tomcat

            Kentucky Ohio and Indiana also.

          • David Walker

PA doesn’t have the numbers, but we’re getting there.

          • Tomcat

These people have no choice but to move around because they get their drugs by stealing things from peoples homes and they get arrest records, they are then bailed out and have to move before the trials so they won’t get picked up on warrants for FTA. This explains how they just keep spreading out from problem areas into decent areas.
The druggies are as much victims as they are criminals, but drug companies don’t ever pay any price for hooking them.

          • David Walker

Understood, and I don’t mean to make light of the victims. I know it’s a growing problem in the “tucky” part of Pennsyltucky, but it’s also rampant in suburban Philly…nice, white suburban Philly. I’ve also encountered two women (separately) higher than Harrisburg’s highest building who have tried to hit me up for money. Their professions that they were now clean really saddened me. Big Pharma makes the opioids; Big Pharma makes the Narcan. I don’t see any incentive to change their ways.

          • clay

In PA, a bigger chunk is heroin than in the hills– Philly is a port of entry and it’s half the cost and twice the potency, here. People coming in from the i-95 corridor get about 4x the dose their expecting for the money they gave.

          • Todd20036

But not DC. Funny how the “lib” areas aren’t hit as hard by the opioid crisis.

        • Tomcat

West Virginia is where they are because the state had a who cares attitude until it started to cost them a lot of money from theft crimes.

          • Tomcat

West Virginia can do the same thing Florida and Tennessee did and stop pill mills and require ALL doctors to report pill prescriptions for these drugs. Cut them a lot in Florida and Tennessee. These pill mills just move to other states that won’t enact laws against these drug mills.

    • clay

States should get off their asses and provide real medical care in these areas. Why were it people in these pockets that got so addicted– because they were prescribed the opioids. Why were people in these pockets prescribed the opioids? Because a lot of them had stage 4 cancer. Why did people in these pockets have stage 4 cancer? Because the areas with the highest opioid addiction rates have nearly no primary care and no advanced oncological care. Even if we tackle the prescribing physicians and the drug companies (why no non-crush-able formulations?), we still need to deal with the underlying issues.

Trump and Price would make ALL of these steps worse.

      • Gustav2

When you see Gov Kasich on TV being all compassionte, the main reason towns don’t have the money is he drastically cut funding to cities and towns for tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations

  • So he wants to have EMTs decide who is worth saving and who isn’t? So maybe fat, old out of shape men don’t deserve saving either? People like this never think such meanness will apply to them, only to the people they feel morally superior to. Sadly, I’m not sure that such an opinion will prove unpopular where he is.

    • Tomcat

Are these fat old out of shape men WHITE, asking for someone else?

      • LesbianTippingHabits

If EMTs ignored fat old out of shape white men, would any media notice?

    • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Its the same bullshit that says insurance companies can deny payment for birthcontol but viagra is covered.

    • Buford

Remember the fire department that showed up to the home but simply watched it burn (killing the pets) because the owners had neglected to pay their annual $75 fee/tax…?

It’ll be like that…“We’re here, and we could easily save your life, but we won’t”.

    • Lazycrockett

Now you know why this branch of the tree got kicked out of France and was never spoken of again.

  • Tomcat

Next year, he will ask, do we actually have to go out for heart attacks, gunshots, knife attacks, etc?

    • Halou

Just let the bodies rot in the streets. The things that “make America great”?

      • Tomcat

They might just sell the body parts to the highest bidders.

    • LesbianTippingHabits

Gunshots, yes. Remember the Second Amendment.

      • clay

In many of these rural areas, the majority of gun-related deaths are suicides of middle-aged and “young old” white men.

Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’

Perhaps President Trump can persuade the manufacturer of Narcan just to donate it to Ohio communities for free.

The two counties [Butler and Warren] in which Middletown is located both went for Trump, or at least against Hillary, by over 60%.

Not that opioid users vote, that is.

  • Dan M

Not that anyone wouldwant to know more about Middletown, but the current NY Times best seller, Hillbilly Elegy by J D Vance, is about Middletown.

  • JWC

O/T A running bet When Trump meets Putin next week Not one word about the Russian influence will be uttered by either side I would also suggest that trump and Puty have a private one on one meeting

    • BobSF_94117

Under normal circumstances, no president would meet with Putin after Russia’s interference in our election and its constant provocations. The only exception would be a summit to resolve and END those things. We know that’s not the plan.

      • JWC

what makes you think anything about Trump is normal???

        • BobSF_94117

Nothing. I just find it odd that the press isn’t talking about how really out of normal a face-to-face meeting like this is. They’re probably going to agree to get along and Trump is going to give Ukraine to Putin as a prezzie.

      I’m incredibly cynical.

I’d take it a couple of steps earlier. Take a group with higher the normal environmental risks, fail to provide them with cancer diagnosis and treatment, then give them pain-killers as their only hope through limited hospice care, and don’t re-collect the un-used pills, THEN your step A.

Buzzfeed just had this story yesterday about three drug dogs that OD’d during a drug search and the fentanyl was found in the CEILING not where the dogs were sniffing.

    • Zeldacat

It’s the mindset of “the only moral abortion is MY abortion”, only with access to drug treatment.

  • this is what happens when racism and reality meet and butt heads.

“middle” america is so deeply entrenched in the mythology that only POC use drugs, it’s not even funny. and yet… for over two decades, rural and exurban america have been flooded with dangerous drugs. crack has mostly come and gone, having burned thru many urban areas of this country. but meth, fenfen, and the rest of them? still killing lots of people from the urban hood to the family farm and back again.

drugs aren’t racist. if you have that disposition, too many drugs will fuck you up and you may die a pitiful addict. some people can take drugs for a short time and be done with them when the need is over, some people can’t. no matter what reason you become addicted to drugs, that’s the reality and you have to deal with it or die horribly.

old white guys from middle of nowhereville refuse to accept this truth. they’ve watched white jeebus loving football potential grandson ‘throw his life away’ over drug use, and usually assign it to his affirmation that black people are people and rap music is fun. they refuse to accept that drugs and the people who push them are a real threat to everyone, and not just those who don’t attend baptist church of bumfuck along with thier loyal congregants and their families.

i grew up in a place where people like this guy are bred and born. i have no pity for him. just as he has no pity for his white neighbors now that they have succumbed to the “lure” of “race music” and hophead culture.

    • Stubenville

May I clarify one detail; it’s incredibly easy to get addicted. A couple of years ago I had excruciatingly painful blood clots and was given a powerful opioid. In retrospect it was fortunate that the pain pills had annoying side effects, and I took them as infrequently as I could manage.

The blood clots eventually were brought under control, and a few months went by. I was having a bad day and suddenly had the thought “Why not just take one of those pills; it will make you feel better.”This is how you get hooked; in a moment of weakness. That evening I brought the unused pills back to the pharmacy and asked the staff to destroy them.

      • kareemachan

I’m thankful that opioids nauseate me. It would have been TOO easy to become addicted otherwise.

      • SoCalGal20

I hear you. Many years ago I had all my wisdom teeth taken out at once. From other people’s stories I think I got off fairly easily. No complications with the oral surgery, etc.

However, the oral surgeon prescribed percocet for the pain. HOLY SHIT. I kept saying I understood how people got hooked because for the week I took it I was flying high. I got so much stuff done at work. I wanted to exercise (of you knew me you’d know it’s not one of my favorite activities) lol. My ex was looking at me like I was nuts. For whatever reason instead of making me want to sleep or feel sluggish percocet acted like a stimulant and man…I could see how much of a problem it could be if wanted to keep taking it. And I have alcoholics on both sides of my family so I have some idea what addiction does to people.

        • leastyebejudged

The euphoria I’ve experienced when I took percocet after all my wisdom teeth were removed I have only near experienced with my husband. Hrmm, I never really thought about that until now. And when he rubs my feet… It’s better than LSD.

  • David

Their own life is an exception, of course.

I wonder if anyone in his family ever struggled with addiction?

    • Max_1

Would he know them if they did… ?

    • Canadian Observer

Nah, I am sure they are all just “social” drinkers. /s

      • Bad Tom

None of them take oxy, H, meth, or any of the fentanyl analogues, either.

  • TimJ

As noted, this news made the rounds a couple weeks ago. But it is worth bringing up over and over again jut to show what a-holes these Republicans are. Hang it around their necks, make them justify this bshit.

  • Dagoril

They’re trying their best to kill over 20 MILLION people by taking away their access to health care. Why on earth would they care about the lives of a few hundred addicts?

    • ultragreen

If they are willing to toss granny out of the nursing home into the street and yank the life support from a baby that was born prematurely, then they certainly will have no qualms about refusing to treat drug addicts.

  • MoonlightUnkindledOne

I’m betting his position would change in a heartbeat if HE was the one who was addicted. Fuck this waste of sperm.

  • netxtown

I know this is gonna just blow up as folks are gonna pick little bullshit pieces here and there…

It was a good question! A damned good question! And bear in mind I am coming from a place that includes my own brother being murdered due to his drug addiction, but also a nephew who is currently in deep.

This adsiction problem is bigger than a single family, and throwing city resources (first responders) is a bandaid on an ugly gaping sore. Free rehab centers arre hugely overwhelmed, and for-profits are pretty much out-of-reach for the average family. How many can cough up $10-30k for a rehab stay???

In many cases, the ‘patients’ will go to a rehab center to get free drugs – but while there they meet and make new contacts. Add to it that many have learned what behavior response will get them in, and let them stay for a roof, a bed, and 3 meals a day. Outside of counseling sessions, the discussions are all about how incredible this high or that high was – and even discussion on how to “more safely” use a drug – especially heroin.

In the meantime advertisements are everywhere showing all these happy, happy people – if they just take this one pill every day.

My sister is now 64, has worked her entire life making damned good money as a neonatal RN. She has spent thousands…no….TENS OF THOUSANDS! trying to save her son. She has spent to the point that her own retirement is no longer an option. She has worked to the point that it is now HER early death that will most likely prevail.

SO, if you think his question was cold or heartless or un-christian – then you most probably haven’t been down this path. There are NO sure fire answers or treatments. NONE!

My youngest brother cashed out $60,000 in equity from his house. 5 months later he was not only dead – but he $2.84 left in the bank. In order to ‘save’ the house, His kids had to come up with 3 or 4K to pay the back taxes. That money should be going to THEIR education, THEIR well-being. Instead, a drug addict who had numerous interventions and numerous chances for rehab – fucked all of them over.

Like I said – it is a damned good question.

FWIW – I have been dealing with the nephew’s addiciton once again since last thursday. He has no money, no job, no transportation – and he moved 800 miles away from everyone. He’s fixing to be homeless, and his phone goes off tonight at midnight.

If I send money – I damned well know a good portion will go for a fresh round of drugs. Knowing that, how much ‘extra’ should you send a drug addict? I told him he could come here, and I would send him a bus ticket to get here- but no, he doesn’t want to do that cuz I live “too far out of the city and there’s just nothing going on”. As it is, I will be paying another $75 to keep his phone on so that we at least have some connection with him.

It ain’t easy folks – and it will wear you down. I already spent $12000 working with him – how much more do we throw at it? What happens when the ‘resources’ finally dwindle to zero? Who is gonna set up that gofundme page to save the family that has done everything they can think of to save him?

      • grada3784

You didn’t cause it; you can’t cure it; you can’t control it.

You’re nephew has to hit something that will convince him to stop; it’s often called a bottom. Regrettably, that is often on the wrong side of death.

I know whereof I speak. I didn’t get clean and sober until I had no one else to blame. That was after everyone walked out of my life.

        • netxtown

I just got off the phone with him. He is now ‘planning’ on moving him and his stuff into a storage unit. His family is at the brink of having to make that ugly choice of walking away.

Any blame he has towards himself is secondary. There is/was always a domino that went down that caused his situation.

I am glad you made it out !!!

    • ultragreen

Medicaid will pay your brother’s hospital and drug treatment expenses, including emergency services from drug overdose. If it doesn’t, then he needs to move to a different state or a city that pays for those expenses. There is no reason other family members should be stuck with those expenses. People in this country need to be more aware of how our health care system, admittedly complicated, actually works.

    • leastyebejudged

Funny thing about this is your own government did this to him.

  • Sporkfighter

Picard is standing by his comments, saying “we need to put a fear about overdosing in Middletown.”

Fear as a motivator…how Christian of him.

    • djcoastermark

That’s been the SOP with those types for, centuries.

  • Oh, Parker

There’s your death panels right there, America.

  • meltedrubbersoul

Fuck this guy. I was addicted. I hear it from so many people, how better off everything would be if I and people like me died.

I wish him the same in return.

    • netxtown

You have no idea how glad I am that you made it out alive. That said, how did you do it?

      • meltedrubbersoul

Total separation from people I used with, a desire to quit, and a mushroom trip that was the closest I ever came to thinking “yes, there is a God.”

I had to just totally leave everything behind, and go to places where I didn’t know where it was.

  • Ron

Denial, ignorance, fear and hatred have become the ethos of, so called, “conservatives!” EXCEPT, when THEY want/need help!
Then they cut to the front of the line and demand!

  • Gregory In Seattle

Because this is what Jesus would do?

  • William

Betty Ford couldn’t rehabilitate this asshole.

  • ultragreen

Little does he know, but this Republican know-it-all could become the next drug addict should he experience an extremely painful injury or illness, during which time he was treated (by his demand) with powerful opioid painkillers.

  • sword

Just the start…when 22 million Americans lose their health insurance…a lot of those icky ‘common people’ are going bite the dust.

  • Richard Schneider

I don’t know what the answer is to all the world’s problems. I just know “tough shit” ain’t it.

  • leastyebejudged

He is permitted to say this, but if I say he deserves the same I get banned/blocked/arrested.

We all lose and keep losing for one reason and one reason only.

  • MPJZ

Well there goes the Trump vote in the Midwest then.

  • JCF

Frankly, I’m really surprised it’s taken this long for Rethugs to start Going There (only its rep as a white-people drug has caused the delay). Surely we haven’t forgotten this?

  • SDG

From a distance… Russia and the USA… starting to look very much the same.

  • Elizabethslunt

What about people who have heart attacks from being overweight or smoking? Should we take the same three strikes approach? Ambulances will be called for the first two heart attacks and then we just let them die?
